Artist Statement for The Garden We Planted, March 1 - April 5, 2008:
My work portrays my personal memories, feelings, and my imaginations through shapes, lines, and color. Being grown up in South Korea, moving to America to study as a teenager, and having my family immigrated to Australia, my work reflects my exploration of personal evolvement. To me, a painter is a visual storyteller so I intend to develop my own stories on top of the subjects of feelings and people that are part of my childhood and my culture. As I am coming from an animation background, I also like creating imaginative objects, creatures, and nature.
Feelings and simplicity are my primary goals in my work. In most of my pieces, I use water color, gouache and acrylic. I enjoy using water color because my hands become more free when I paint. It can also capture the feelings and the movements well that I want to display in my work.
Through this exhibition, I wanted to portray my feelings towards the garden we planted. I imagined my grandmother's garden in the country side where we used to visit every summer when we were little. Those colorful plants and fruits were our playground, and our ocean to rest, but also a place where we often used to get lost.
